Mission Statement
At tranScript productions, we strive to cultivate a space that highlights and uplifts trans voices and stories. Focusing on collaboration, compassion, and honesty, we aim to foster a community where it is safe for trans and nonbinary (henceforth referred to as trans+) theater makers, in addition to other queer artists, to unite and tell stories that engage with the truth of human existence, both the struggles and the joys. We celebrate the intersecting identities that make up our complex selves. We aim to challenge current political narratives surrounding the discussions of trans and nonbinary individuals and to curate a space in which their narratives and voices may be seen and heard without interruption or hindrance. We tell our stories with unifying truth to fill the void created by those who would wish to see our voices erased.
Vision Statement
Our productions embody our mission through the following qualifications:
- Stories written by trans+ playwrights
- Stories that feature explicitly trans+ characters and/or themes
- Stories that use creative casting choices to break binaries and center actors’ abilities and preferences, not assigned gender at birth
Our decisions regarding each production takes into consideration whether or not a work meets at least one of these qualifications and is written to highlight the trans+ community in good faith.
Our present moment includes false narratives about trans+ people, which contributes to a culture of violence and vilification. We tell trans+ stories to fight back against this deliberate misrepresentation. We tell these stories with the kindness, grace, and respect they deserve as voices of people who wish only for a place in which they can be unashamedly themselves. We may not be the world. But we can be the world we wish to see.
